treasury secretary geithner and even defense secretary leon panetta has made it clear he would like to leave within the year. the current white house chief of staff still considered the odds on favorite to get the nod to become the next treasury secretary from the president. it's believed he has the greatest chance here it's believed of getting senate confirmation. that leaves open the job of white house chief of staff. and i'm hearing that among the names that are being considered for that role are ron clay, the man once biden's chief of staff and did himself i'm told a great service in president obama's debate prep despite that bad first debate the president takes responsibility for it, does not blame mr. clain. and another name i've heard floated is dennis mcdunna. earned the great respect and admiration of the president. a young man not often considered in that light but the president admires him. but that of course leaves open the question who would take over for secretary clinton and for leon panetta. and those are some dicey questions right now given what dana has just report

. overnight we learn that israel's defense minister, ehud barak is resigning his post. that's effective come january. that development comes as delegations for both israel and hamas meet in cairo today. they're meeting with egyptian officials to try to advance those cease-fire talks. and egypt's president mohamed morsi will meet today with judges to explain his edict barring them from overturning any decision that he makes or any laws that he imposes until a new parliament is formed. reza sayah is in cairo this morning. let's start with mohamed morsi, please. >> yeah, good morning, soledad. a few thousand protesters still here in south tahrir squares, especially those who camped out over the past several days, still seeing some clashes. most of them triggered by what seem to be teenagers and twenty somethings out here looking for trouble. we also saw our first fatality of the protest last night on sunday in a northern city where a 15-year-old member of the muslim brotherhood youth movement was clubbed to death. at this point the brotherhood doesn't seem to be using that fatality as a rallyin

loss of jobs, higher mandated taxes, defense budget, small price to pay for standing on principle approximately it's a betrayal for a huge number of these people. if you're a republican, hell bent on never raising taxes, go over the cliff and then give into the president but you can also say you cut taxes. remember that? it's a win-win to go over the clip. then you don't break the grover norquist pledge to raise taxes. which is why it's time to prepare for the failure of december talks. maybe we need the hardships main street middle class to become so clear that a compromise that abandons cherished principles may be the only way to avoid a recession, which would give other candidates a chance to rise up and take your seat in congress. hence why i'm not back with the 10% solution, a solution like how the dreaded tarp got through congress, so-called bank bailout. 10% after tarp was first rejected and congress people, constituents who own stock, people who can afford to contribute to campaigns, we better do some compromising. that could happen again if we don't get a deal by year end

? some down payment. the second act is some clear indication of what to do with medicare and defense stocks. they have to give a clear indication otherwise there's going to be some kind of credit downgrades in the months going into 2013. how about the greek deal? i fell out of my chair. this is a default in all but name. look at this. an extension of the loans for 15 years. 15 years. $245 billion of loans. deferral of interest payments for ten years. deferred for ten years. and a reduction in interest rates. imagine this. you have a 30-year mortgage at 3%. now instead of a 30-year mortgage you have a 45-year mortgage. instead of 3% you're paying 2%. how about no interest payments for the next ten years on your 30-year mortgage? that's the deal the greeks just signed. it's staggering because what's happening here is don't call it a default. it's not a default. it's a restructuring. the fact is this is the first step on forgiveness of the debt. they're not officially forgiving any debt. don't say that. they'll freak out on you. the fact is that the next step from here is going out into
